The Ruth Hamilton-Elta Garrett Music and Arts Academy (HGMAA) is an after-school music academy serving children grades 3-12. Named after Ruth Hamilton, a world-renowned contralto who passed away in 2001, and Elta Garrett, a well known soprano who recently retired from Boston Public Schools after teaching for over forty years (both Charles Street AME Church members), HGMAA is dedicated to passing on the rich legacy of Black cultural music to the next generation. Founded in 2001 with four voice students, HGMAA has expanded to include numerous students who learn music theory, music history and appreciation, and receive private and semi-private instruction on a wide variety of musical instruments by a staff of dedicated and highly trained musicians. However, this academy is not simply an arts program. It is a cultural development program that challenges and equips young people to use the powerful medium of music to transform lives, redefine ethnic identity, and build community cohesion around life-giving cultural products. |
